perf c2c: Fix sorting in percent_rmt_hitm_cmp()
[ Upstream commit b24192a17337abbf3f44aaa75e15df14a2d0016e ]
The function percent_rmt_hitm_cmp() wrongly uses local HITMs for
sorting remote HITMs.
Since this function is to sort cache lines for remote HITMs, this patch
changes to use 'rmt_hitm' field for correct sorting.

perf jevents: Fix event syntax error caused by ExtSel
[ Upstream commit f4df0dbbe62ee8e4405a57b27ccd54393971c773 ]
In the origin code, when "ExtSel" is 1, the eventcode will change to
"eventcode |= 1 << 21”. For event “UNC_Q_RxL_CREDITS_CONSUMED_VN0.DRS",
its "ExtSel" is "1", its eventcode will change from 0x1E to 0x20001E,
but in fact the eventcode should <=0x1FF, so this will cause the parse
fail:
# perf stat -e "UNC_Q_RxL_CREDITS_CONSUMED_VN0.DRS" -a sleep 0.1
event syntax error: '.._RxL_CREDITS_CONSUMED_VN0.DRS'
\___ value too big for format, maximum is 511
On the perf kernel side, the kernel assumes the valid bits are continuous.
It will adjust the 0x100 (bit 8 for perf tool) to bit 21 in HW.
DEFINE_UNCORE_FORMAT_ATTR(event_ext, event, "config:0-7,21");
So the perf tool follows the kernel side and just set bit8 other than bit21.

perf c2c: Use stdio interface if slang is not supported
[ Upstream commit c4040212bc97d16040712a410335f93bc94d2262 ]
If the slang lib is not installed on the system, perf c2c tool disables TUI
mode and roll back to use stdio mode; but the flag 'c2c.use_stdio' is
missed to set true and thus it wrongly applies UI quirks in the function
ui_quirks().
This commit forces to use stdio interface if slang is not supported, and
it can avoid to apply the UI quirks and show the correct metric header.

Yes, I think that is probably the best solution. As far as I can tell, at least in this file and context, the warning appears harmless, as the "create a GNU C statement expression from two different macros" is very much intentional, based on the presence of PERL_USE_GCC_BRACE_GROUPS. The warning is fixed in upstream Perl by just avoiding creating GNU C statement expressions using STMT_START and STMT_END: https://github.com/Perl/perl5/issues/18780 https://github.com/Perl/perl5/pull/18984 If I am reading the source code correctly, an alternative to disabling the warning would be specifying -DPERL_GCC_BRACE_GROUPS_FORBIDDEN but it seems like that might end up impacting more than just this site, according to the issue discussion above. </quote> Based-on-a-patch-by: Sedat Dilek <sedat.dilek@gmail.com> Tested-by: Sedat Dilek <sedat.dilek@gmail.com> # Debian/Selfmade LLVM-14 (x86-64) Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: Fangrui Song <maskray@google.com> Cc: Florian Fainelli <f.fainelli@gmail.com> Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: John Keeping <john@metanate.com> Cc: Leo Yan <leo.yan@linaro.org> Cc: Michael Petlan <mpetlan@redhat.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Nathan Chancellor <nathan@kernel.org> Cc: Nick Desaulniers <ndesaulniers@google.com> Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/YkxWcYzph5pC1EK8@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> |

perf symbols: Fix symbol size calculation condition
commit 3cf6a32f3f2a45944dd5be5c6ac4deb46bcd3bee upstream.
Before this patch, the symbol end address fixup to be called, needed two
conditions being met:
if (prev->end == prev->start && prev->end != curr->start)
Where
"prev->end == prev->start" means that prev is zero-long
(and thus needs a fixup)
and
"prev->end != curr->start" means that fixup hasn't been applied yet
However, this logic is incorrect in the following situation:
*curr = {rb_node = {__rb_parent_color = 278218928,
rb_right = 0x0, rb_left = 0x0},
start = 0xc000000000062354,
end = 0xc000000000062354, namelen = 40, type = 2 '\002',
binding = 0 '\000', idle = 0 '\000', ignore = 0 '\000',
inlined = 0 '\000', arch_sym = 0 '\000', annotate2 = false,
name = 0x1159739e "kprobe_optinsn_page\t[__builtin__kprobes]"}
*prev = {rb_node = {__rb_parent_color = 278219041,
rb_right = 0x109548b0, rb_left = 0x109547c0},
start = 0xc000000000062354,
end = 0xc000000000062354, namelen = 12, type = 2 '\002',
binding = 1 '\001', idle = 0 '\000', ignore = 0 '\000',
inlined = 0 '\000', arch_sym = 0 '\000', annotate2 = false,
name = 0x1095486e "optinsn_slot"}
In this case, prev->start == prev->end == curr->start == curr->end,
thus the condition above thinks that "we need a fixup due to zero
length of prev symbol, but it has been probably done, since the
prev->end == curr->start", which is wrong.
After the patch, the execution path proceeds to arch__symbols__fixup_end
function which fixes up the size of prev symbol by adding page_size to
its end offset.

perf session: Correct buffer copying when peeking events
[ Upstream commit 197eecb6ecae0b04bd694432f640ff75597fed9c ]
When peeking an event, it has a short path and a long path. The short
path uses the session pointer "one_mmap_addr" to directly fetch the
event; and the long path needs to read out the event header and the
following event data from file and fill into the buffer pointer passed
through the argument "buf".
The issue is in the long path that it copies the event header and event
data into the same destination address which pointer "buf", this means
the event header is overwritten. We are just lucky to run into the
short path in most cases, so we don't hit the issue in the long path.
This patch adds the offset "hdr_sz" to the pointer "buf" when copying
the event data, so that it can reserve the event header which can be
used properly by its caller.

perf jevents: Fix getting maximum number of fds
commit 75ea44e356b5de8c817f821c9dd68ae329e82add upstream.
On some hosts, rlim.rlim_max can be returned as RLIM_INFINITY.
By casting it to int, it is interpreted as -1, which will cause get_maxfds

Fix this by casting the second argument of min() to rlim_t instead.

perf intel-pt: Fix sample instruction bytes
commit c954eb72b31a9dc56c99b450253ec5b121add320 upstream.
The decoder reports the current instruction if it was decoded. In some
cases the current instruction is not decoded, in which case the instruction
bytes length must be set to zero. Ensure that is always done.
Note perf script can anyway get the instruction bytes for any samples where
they are not present.
Also note, that there is a redundant "ptq->insn_len = 0" statement which is
not removed until a subsequent patch in order to make this patch apply
cleanly to stable branches.
Example:
A machne that supports TSX is required. It will have flag "rtm". Kernel
parameter tsx=on may be required.

perf auxtrace: Fix auxtrace queue conflict
[ Upstream commit b410ed2a8572d41c68bd9208555610e4b07d0703 ]
The only requirement of an auxtrace queue is that the buffers are in
time order. That is achieved by making separate queues for separate
perf buffer or AUX area buffer mmaps.
That generally means a separate queue per cpu for per-cpu contexts, and
a separate queue per thread for per-task contexts.
When buffers are added to a queue, perf checks that the buffer cpu and
thread id (tid) match the queue cpu and thread id.
However, generally, that need not be true, and perf will queue buffers
correctly anyway, so the check is not needed.
In addition, the check gets erroneously hit when using sample mode to
trace multiple threads.
Consequently, fix that case by removing the check.

allocated by strdup() needs to be released before __parse_regs()

perf cs-etm: Move definition of 'traceid_list' global variable from header file
commit 168200b6d6ea0cb5765943ec5da5b8149701f36a upstream.
The variable 'traceid_list' is defined in the header file cs-etm.h,
if multiple C files include cs-etm.h the compiler might complaint for
multiple definition of 'traceid_list'.
To fix multiple definition error, move the definition of 'traceid_list'

perf cs-etm: Change tuple from traceID-CPU# to traceID-metadata
commit 95c6fe970a0160cb770c5dce9f80311b42d030c0 upstream. If packet processing wants to know the packet is bound with which ETM version, it needs to access metadata to decide that based on metadata magic number; but we cannot simply to use CPU logic ID number as index to access metadata sequential array, especially when system have hotplugged off CPUs, the metadata array are only allocated for online CPUs but not offline CPUs, so the CPU logic number doesn't match with its index in the array. This patch is to change tuple from traceID-CPU# to traceID-metadata, thus it can use the tuple to retrieve metadata pointer according to traceID. For safe accessing metadata fields, this patch provides helper function cs_etm__get_cpu() which is used to return CPU number according to traceID; cs_etm_decoder__buffer_packet() is the first consumer for this helper function. Since insn.prefixes.nbytes can be bigger than the size of

perf lock: Don't free "lock_seq_stat" if read_count isn't zero
[ Upstream commit b0e5a05cc9e37763c7f19366d94b1a6160c755bc ]
When execute command "perf lock report", it hits failure and outputs log
as follows:
perf: builtin-lock.c:623: report_lock_release_event: Assertion `!(seq->read_count < 0)' failed.
Aborted
This is an imbalance issue. The locking sequence structure
"lock_seq_stat" contains the reader counter and it is used to check if
the locking sequence is balance or not between acquiring and releasing.
If the tool wrongly frees "lock_seq_stat" when "read_count" isn't zero,
the "read_count" will be reset to zero when allocate a new structure at
the next time; thus it causes the wrong counting for reader and finally
results in imbalance issue.
To fix this issue, if detects "read_count" is not zero (means still have
read user in the locking sequence), goto the "end" tag to skip freeing
structure "lock_seq_stat".

tools: perf: Fix build error in v4.19.y
perf may fail to build in v4.19.y with the following error.
util/evsel.c: In function ‘perf_evsel__exit’:
util/util.h:25:28: error:
passing argument 1 of ‘free’ discards ‘const’ qualifier from pointer target type
This is observed (at least) with gcc v6.5.0. The underlying problem is
the following statement.
zfree(&evsel->pmu_name);
evsel->pmu_name is decared 'const *'. zfree in turn is defined as
#define zfree(ptr) ({ free(*ptr); *ptr = NULL; })
and thus passes the const * to free(). The problem is not seen
in the upstream kernel since zfree() has been rewritten there.
The problem has been introduced into v4.19.y with the backport of upstream
commit d4953f7ef1a2 (perf parse-events: Fix 3 use after frees found with
clang ASAN).
One possible fix of this problem would be to not declare pmu_name
as const. This patch chooses to typecast the parameter of zfree()
to void *, following the guidance from the upstream kernel which
does the same since commit 7f7c536f23e6a ("tools lib: Adopt
zalloc()/zfree() from tools/perf")

perf python scripting: Fix printable strings in python3 scripts
commit 6fcd5ddc3b1467b3586972ef785d0d926ae4cdf4 upstream.
Hagen reported broken strings in python3 tracepoint scripts:
make PYTHON=python3
perf record -e sched:sched_switch -a -- sleep 5
perf script --gen-script py
perf script -s ./perf-script.py
[..]
sched__sched_switch 7 563231.759525792 0 swapper prev_comm=bytearray(b'swapper/7\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00'), prev_pid=0, prev_prio=120, prev_state=, next_comm=bytearray(b'mutex-thread-co\x00'),
The problem is in the is_printable_array function that does not take the
zero byte into account and claim such string as not printable, so the
code will create byte array instead of string.

perf intel-pt: Fix "context_switch event has no tid" error
[ Upstream commit 7d537a8d2e76bc4fc71e34545ceaa463ac2cd928 ]
A context_switch event can have no tid because pids can be detached from
a task while the task is still running (in do_exit()). Note this won't
happen with per-task contexts because then tracing stops at
perf_event_exit_task()
If a task with no tid gets preempted, or a dying task gets preempted and
its parent releases it, when it subsequently gets switched back in,
Intel PT will not be able to determine what task is running and prints
an error "context_switch event has no tid". However, it is not really an
error because the task is in kernel space and the decoder can continue
to decode successfully. Fix by changing the error to be only a logged
message, and make allowance for tid == -1.

Using 5.9-rc4 with Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop) e.g.
