BACKPORT: mm: introduce MADV_PAGEOUT
When a process expects no accesses to a certain memory range for a long time, it could hint kernel that the pages can be reclaimed instantly but data should be preserved for future use. This could reduce workingset eviction so it ends up increasing performance. This patch introduces the new MADV_PAGEOUT hint to madvise(2) syscall. MADV_PAGEOUT can be used by a process to mark a memory range as not expected to be used for a long time so that kernel reclaims *any LRU* pages instantly. The hint can help kernel in deciding which pages to evict proactively. A note: It doesn't apply SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX LRU page isolation limit intentionally because it's automatically bounded by PMD size. If PMD size(e.g., 256) makes some trouble, we could fix it later by limit it to SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX[1]. - man-page material MADV_PAGEOUT (since Linux x.x) Do not expect access in the near future so pages in the specified regions could be reclaimed instantly regardless of memory pressure. Thus, access in the range after successful operation could cause major page fault but never lose the up-to-date contents unlike MADV_DONTNEED. Pages belonging to a shared mapping are only processed if a write access is allowed for the calling process. MADV_PAGEOUT cannot be applied to locked pages, Huge TLB pages, or VM_PFNMAP pages. BACKPORT: mm: introduce MADV_COLD
Patch series "Introduce MADV_COLD and MADV_PAGEOUT", v7. - Background The Android terminology used for forking a new process and starting an app from scratch is a cold start, while resuming an existing app is a hot start. While we continually try to improve the performance of cold starts, hot starts will always be significantly less power hungry as well as faster so we are trying to make hot start more likely than cold start. To increase hot start, Android userspace manages the order that apps should be killed in a process called ActivityManagerService. ActivityManagerService tracks every Android app or service that the user could be interacting with at any time and translates that into a ranked list for lmkd(low memory killer daemon). They are likely to be killed by lmkd if the system has to reclaim memory. In that sense they are similar to entries in any other cache. Those apps are kept alive for opportunistic performance improvements but those performance improvements will vary based on the memory requirements of individual workloads. - Problem Naturally, cached apps were dominant consumers of memory on the system. However, they were not significant consumers of swap even though they are good candidate for swap. Under investigation, swapping out only begins once the low zone watermark is hit and kswapd wakes up, but the overall allocation rate in the system might trip lmkd thresholds and cause a cached process to be killed(we measured performance swapping out vs. zapping the memory by killing a process. Unsurprisingly, zapping is 10x times faster even though we use zram which is much faster than real storage) so kill from lmkd will often satisfy the high zone watermark, resulting in very few pages actually being moved to swap. - Approach The approach we chose was to use a new interface to allow userspace to proactively reclaim entire processes by leveraging platform information. This allowed us to bypass the inaccuracy of the kernel’s LRUs for pages that are known to be cold from userspace and to avoid races with lmkd by reclaiming apps as soon as they entered the cached state. Additionally, it could provide many chances for platform to use much information to optimize memory efficiency. To achieve the goal, the patchset introduce two new options for madvise. One is MADV_COLD which will deactivate activated pages and the other is MADV_PAGEOUT which will reclaim private pages instantly. These new options complement MADV_DONTNEED and MADV_FREE by adding non-destructive ways to gain some free memory space. MADV_PAGEOUT is similar to MADV_DONTNEED in a way that it hints the kernel that memory region is not currently needed and should be reclaimed immediately; MADV_COLD is similar to MADV_FREE in a way that it hints the kernel that memory region is not currently needed and should be reclaimed when memory pressure rises. It works for every LRU pages like MADV_[DONTNEED|FREE]. IOW, It moves active file page -> inactive file LRU active anon page -> inacdtive anon LRU Unlike MADV_FREE, it doesn't move active anonymous pages to inactive file LRU's head because MADV_COLD is a little bit different symantic. MADV_FREE means it's okay to discard when the memory pressure because the content of the page is *garbage* so freeing such pages is almost zero overhead since we don't need to swap out and access afterward causes just minor fault. Thus, it would make sense to put those freeable pages in inactive file LRU to compete other used-once pages. It makes sense for implmentaion point of view, too because it's not swapbacked memory any longer until it would be re-dirtied. Even, it could give a bonus to make them be reclaimed on swapless system. However, MADV_COLD doesn't mean garbage so reclaiming them requires swap-out/in in the end so it's bigger cost. Since we have designed VM LRU aging based on cost-model, anonymous cold pages would be better to position inactive anon's LRU list, not file LRU. Furthermore, it would help to avoid unnecessary scanning if system doesn't have a swap device. Let's start simpler way without adding complexity at this moment. However, keep in mind, too that it's a caveat that workloads with a lot of pages cache are likely to ignore MADV_COLD on anonymous memory because we rarely age anonymous LRU lists. * man-page material MADV_COLD (since Linux x.x) Pages in the specified regions will be treated as less-recently-accessed compared to pages in the system with similar access frequencies. In contrast to MADV_FREE, the contents of the region are preserved regardless of subsequent writes to pages. MADV_COLD cannot be applied to locked pages, Huge TLB pages, or VM_PFNMAP pages. BACKPORT: arch/tlb: Clean up simple architectures
For the architectures that do not implement their own tlb_flush() but do already use the generic mmu_gather, there are two options: 1) the platform has an efficient flush_tlb_range() and asm-generic/tlb.h doesn't need any overrides at all. 2) the platform lacks an efficient flush_tlb_range() and we select MMU_GATHER_NO_RANGE to minimize full invalidates. Convert all 'simple' architectures to one of these two forms. alpha: has no range invalidate -> 2 arc: already used flush_tlb_range() -> 1 c6x: has no range invalidate -> 2 hexagon: has an efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 (flush_tlb_mm() is in fact a full range invalidate, so no need to shoot down everything) m68k: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 microblaze: has no flush_tlb_range() -> 2 mips: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 (even though it currently seems to use flush_tlb_mm()) nds32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 nios2: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) openrisc: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) parisc: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 sparc32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 unicore32: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) xtensa: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 Note this also fixes a bug in the existing code for a number platforms. Those platforms that did: tlb_end_vma() -> if (!full_mm) flush_tlb_*() tlb_flush -> if (full_mm) flush_tlb_mm() missed the case of shift_arg_pages(), which doesn't have @fullmm set, nor calls into tlb_*vma(), but still frees page-tables and thus needs an invalidate. The new code handles this by detecting a non-empty range, and either issuing the matching range invalidate or a full invalidate, depending on the capabilities. No change in behavior intended. UPSTREAM: lib/xor: make xor prototypes more friendly to compiler vectorization
Modern compilers are perfectly capable of extracting parallelism from the XOR routines, provided that the prototypes reflect the nature of the input accurately, in particular, the fact that the input vectors are expected not to overlap. This is not documented explicitly, but is implied by the interchangeability of the various C routines, some of which use temporary variables while others don't: this means that these routines only behave identically for non-overlapping inputs. So let's decorate these input vectors with the __restrict modifier, which informs the compiler that there is no overlap. While at it, make the input-only vectors pointer-to-const as well. mm: treewide: remove unused address argument from pte_alloc functions
Patch series "Add support for fast mremap". This series speeds up the mremap(2) syscall by copying page tables at the PMD level even for non-THP systems. There is concern that the extra 'address' argument that mremap passes to pte_alloc may do something subtle architecture related in the future that may make the scheme not work. Also we find that there is no point in passing the 'address' to pte_alloc since its unused. This patch therefore removes this argument tree-wide resulting in a nice negative diff as well. Also ensuring along the way that the enabled architectures do not do anything funky with the 'address' argument that goes unnoticed by the optimization. Build and boot tested on x86-64. Build tested on arm64. The config enablement patch for arm64 will be posted in the future after more testing. The changes were obtained by applying the following Coccinelle script. (thanks Julia for answering all Coccinelle questions!). alpha: define get_cycles macro for arch-override

Alpha defines a get_cycles() function, but it does not do the usual `#define get_cycles get_cycles` dance, making it impossible for generic code to see if an arch-specific function was defined. While the get_cycles() ifdef is not currently used, the following timekeeping patch in this series will depend on the macro existing (or not existing) when defining random_get_entropy(). alpha: Declare virt_to_phys and virt_to_bus parameter as pointer to volatile

alpha: Send stop IPI to send to online CPUs
[ Upstream commit caace6ca4e06f09413fb8f8a63319594cfb7d47d ] This issue was noticed while debugging a shutdown issue where some secondary CPUs are not being shutdown correctly. A fix for that [1] requires that secondary cpus be offlined using the cpu_online_mask so that the stop operation is a no-op if CPU HOTPLUG is disabled. I, like the author in [1] looked at the architectures and found that alpha is one of two architectures that executes smp_send_stop() on all possible CPUs. On alpha, smp_send_stop() sends an IPI to all possible CPUs but only needs to send them to online CPUs. Send the stop IPI to only the online CPUs. alpha: fix annotation of io{read,write}{16,32}be()
[ Upstream commit bd72866b8da499e60633ff28f8a4f6e09ca78efe ] These accessors must be used to read/write a big-endian bus. The value returned or written is native-endian. However, these accessors are defined using be{16,32}_to_cpu() or cpu_to_be{16,32}() to make the endian conversion but these expect a __be{16,32} when none is present. Keeping them would need a force cast that would solve nothing at all. So, do the conversion using swab{16,32}, like done in asm-generic for similar situations. scsi: sr: remove references to BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR, leave it enabled
[ Upstream commit 679b2ec8e060ca7a90441aff5e7d384720a41b76 ] This kernel configuration is basically enabling/disabling sr driver quirks detection. While these quirks are for fairly rare devices (very old CD burners, and a glucometer), the additional detection of these models is a very minimal amount of code. The logic behind the quirks is always built into the sr driver. This also removes the config from all the defconfig files that are enabling this already. Fix 'acccess_ok()' on alpha and SH
commit 94bd8a05cd4de344a9a57e52ef7d99550251984f upstream. Commit 594cc251fdd0 ("make 'user_access_begin()' do 'access_ok()'") broke both alpha and SH booting in qemu, as noticed by Guenter Roeck. It turns out that the bug wasn't actually in that commit itself (which would have been surprising: it was mostly a no-op), but in how the addition of access_ok() to the strncpy_from_user() and strnlen_user() functions now triggered the case where those functions would test the access of the very last byte of the user address space. The string functions actually did that user range test before too, but they did it manually by just comparing against user_addr_max(). But with user_access_begin() doing the check (using "access_ok()"), it now exposed problems in the architecture implementations of that function. For example, on alpha, the access_ok() helper macro looked like this: #define __access_ok(addr, size) \ ((get_fs().seg & (addr | size | (addr+size))) == 0) and what it basically tests is of any of the high bits get set (the USER_DS masking value is 0xfffffc0000000000). And that's completely wrong for the "addr+size" check. Because it's off-by-one for the case where we check to the very end of the user address space, which is exactly what the strn*_user() functions do. Why? Because "addr+size" will be exactly the size of the address space, so trying to access the last byte of the user address space will fail the __access_ok() check, even though it shouldn't. As a result, the user string accessor functions failed consistently - because they literally don't know how long the string is going to be, and the max access is going to be that last byte of the user address space. Side note: that alpha macro is buggy for another reason too - it re-uses the arguments twice. And SH has another version of almost the exact same bug: #define __addr_ok(addr) \ ((unsigned long __force)(addr) < current_thread_info()->addr_limit.seg) so far so good: yes, a user address must be below the limit. But then: #define __access_ok(addr, size) \ (__addr_ok((addr) + (size))) is wrong with the exact same off-by-one case: the case when "addr+size" is exactly _equal_ to the limit is actually perfectly fine (think "one byte access at the last address of the user address space") The SH version is actually seriously buggy in another way: it doesn't actually check for overflow, even though it did copy the _comment_ that talks about overflow. So it turns out that both SH and alpha actually have completely buggy implementations of access_ok(), but they happened to work in practice (although the SH overflow one is a serious serious security bug, not that anybody likely cares about SH security). This fixes the problems by using a similar macro on both alpha and SH. It isn't trying to be clever, the end address is based on this logic: unsigned long __ao_end = __ao_a + __ao_b - !!__ao_b; which basically says "add start and length, and then subtract one unless the length was zero". We can't subtract one for a zero length, or we'd just hit an underflow instead. For a lot of access_ok() users the length is a constant, so this isn't actually as expensive as it initially looks. alpha: Fix Eiger NR_IRQS to 128
commit bfc913682464f45bc4d6044084e370f9048de9d5 upstream. Eiger machine vector definition has nr_irqs 128, and working 2.6.26 boot shows SCSI getting IRQ-s 64 and 65. Current kernel boot fails because Symbios SCSI fails to request IRQ-s and does not find the disks. It has been broken at least since 3.18 - the earliest I could test with my gcc-5. The headers have moved around and possibly another order of defines has worked in the past - but since 128 seems to be correct and used, fix arch/alpha/include/asm/irq.h to have NR_IRQS=128 for Eiger. This fixes 4.19-rc7 boot on my Force Flexor A264 (Eiger subarch). Instead `gp` was overwritten in place of `a1`. This happens due to a off-by-two bug in `dpf_reg()` for `r16-r18` (aka `a0-a2`). I think the bug went unnoticed for a long time as `gp` is one of scratch registers. Any kernel function call would re-calculate `gp`. Dmitry tracked down the bug origin back to 2.1.32 kernel version where trap_a{0,1,2} fields were inserted into struct pt_regs. And even before that `dpf_reg()` contained off-by-one error. arch/alpha, termios: implement BOTHER, IBSHIFT and termios2
commit d0ffb805b729322626639336986bc83fc2e60871 upstream. Alpha has had c_ispeed and c_ospeed, but still set speeds in c_cflags using arbitrary flags. Because BOTHER is not defined, the general Linux code doesn't allow setting arbitrary baud rates, and because CBAUDEX == 0, we can have an array overrun of the baud_rate[] table in drivers/tty/tty_baudrate.c if (c_cflags & CBAUD) == 037. Resolve both problems by #defining BOTHER to 037 on Alpha. However, userspace still needs to know if setting BOTHER is actually safe given legacy kernels (does anyone actually care about that on Alpha anymore?), so enable the TCGETS2/TCSETS*2 ioctls on Alpha, even though they use the same structure. Define struct termios2 just for compatibility; it is the exact same structure as struct termios. In a future patchset, this will be cleaned up so the uapi headers are usable from libc. namespace admin to stall all processes that attempt to take uts_sem.

Kconfig: consolidate the "Kernel hacking" menu
Move the source of lib/Kconfig.debug and arch/$(ARCH)/Kconfig.debug to the top-level Kconfig. For two architectures that means moving their arch-specific symbols in that menu into a new arch Kconfig.debug file, and for a few more creating a dummy file so that we can include it unconditionally. locking/atomics: Rework ordering barriers
Currently architectures can override __atomic_op_*() to define the barriers used before/after a relaxed atomic when used to build acquire/release/fence variants. This has the unfortunate property of requiring the architecture to define the full wrapper for the atomics, rather than just the barriers they care about, and gets in the way of generating atomics which can be easily read. Instead, this patch has architectures define an optional set of barriers: * __atomic_acquire_fence() * __atomic_release_fence() * __atomic_pre_full_fence() * __atomic_post_full_fence() ... which <linux/atomic.h> uses to build the wrappers. It would be nice if we could undef these, along with the __atomic_op_*() wrappers, but that would break the cmpxchg() wrappers, which are written in preprocessor. Undefs would have been nice, but alas. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. net: Add a new socket option for a future transmit time.
This patch introduces SO_TXTIME. User space enables this option in order to pass a desired future transmit time in a CMSG when calling sendmsg(2). The argument to this socket option is a 8-bytes long struct provided by the uapi header net_tstamp.h defined as: struct sock_txtime { clockid_t clockid; u32 flags; }; Note that new fields were added to struct sock by filling a 2-bytes hole found in the struct. For that reason, neither the struct size or number of cachelines were altered. Some of the atomics return the result of a test applied after the atomic operation, and almost all architectures implement these as trivial wrappers around the underlying atomic. Specifically: * <atomic>_inc_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_inc_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_dec_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_dec_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_sub_and_test(i, v) is (<atomic>_sub_return(i, v) == 0) * <atomic>_add_negative(i, v) is (<atomic>_add_return(i, v) < 0) Rather than have these definitions duplicated in all architectures, with minor inconsistencies in formatting and documentation, let's make these operations optional, with default fallbacks as above. Implementations must now provide a preprocessor symbol. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. Both x86 and m68k have custom implementations, which are left as-is, given preprocessor symbols to avoid being overridden. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. As a step towards unifying the atomic/atomic64/atomic_long APIs, this patch converts the arch/alpha implementation of atomic64_add_unless() into an implementation of atomic64_fetch_add_unless(). A wrapper in <linux/atomic.h> will build atomic_add_unless() atop of this, provided it is given a preprocessor definition. No functional change is intended as a result of this patch. Several architectures these have a near-identical implementation based on atomic_read() and atomic_cmpxchg() which we can instead define in <linux/atomic.h>, so let's do so, using something close to the existing x86 implementation with try_cmpxchg(). Where an architecture provides its own atomic_fetch_add_unless(), it must define a preprocessor symbol for it. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. Note that arch/arc's existing atomic_fetch_add_unless() had redundant barriers, as these are already present in its atomic_cmpxchg() implementation. We define a trivial fallback for atomic_inc_not_zero(), but don't do the same for atomic64_inc_not_zero(), leading most architectures to define the same boilerplate. Let's add a fallback in <linux/atomic.h>, and remove the redundant implementations. Note that atomic64_add_unless() is always defined in <linux/atomic.h>, and promotes its arguments to the requisite types, so we need not do this explicitly. atomics/treewide: Rename __atomic_add_unless() => atomic_fetch_add_unless()
While __atomic_add_unless() was originally intended as a building-block for atomic_add_unless(), it's now used in a number of places around the kernel. It's the only common atomic operation named __atomic*(), rather than atomic_*(), and for consistency it would be better named atomic_fetch_add_unless(). This lack of consistency is slightly confusing, and gets in the way of scripting atomics. Given that, let's clean things up and promote it to an official part of the atomics API, in the form of atomic_fetch_add_unless(). alpha: Remove custom dec_and_lock() implementation
Alpha provides a custom implementation of dec_and_lock(). The functions is split into two parts: - atomic_add_unless() + return 0 (fast path in assembly) - remaining part including locking (slow path in C) Comparing the result of the alpha implementation with the generic implementation compiled by gcc it looks like the fast path is optimized by avoiding a stack frame (and reloading the GP), register store and all this. This is only done in the slowpath. After marking the slowpath (atomic_dec_and_lock_1()) as "noinline" and doing the slowpath in C (the atomic_add_unless(atomic, -1, 1) part) I noticed differences in the resulting assembly: - the GP is still reloaded - atomic_add_unless() adds more memory barriers compared to the custom assembly - the custom assembly here does "load, sub, beq" while atomic_add_unless() does "load, cmpeq, add, bne". This is okay because it compares against zero after subtraction while the generic code compares against 1 before. I'm not sure if avoiding the stack frame (and GP reloading) brings a lot in terms of performance. kbuild: add machine size to CHECKFLAGS
By default, sparse assumes a 64bit machine when compiled on x86-64 and 32bit when compiled on anything else. This can of course create all sort of problems for the other archs, like issuing false warnings ('shift too big (32) for type unsigned long'), or worse, failing to emit legitimate warnings. Fix this by adding the -m32/-m64 flag, depending on CONFIG_64BIT, to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs). Also, remove the now unneeded -m32/-m64 in arch specific Makefiles. alpha: io: reorder barriers to guarantee writeX() and iowriteX() ordering #2
memory-barriers.txt has been updated with the following requirement. "When using writel(), a prior wmb() is not needed to guarantee that the cache coherent memory writes have completed before writing to the MMIO region." Current writeX() and iowriteX() implementations on alpha are not satisfying this requirement as the barrier is after the register write. Move mb() in writeX() and iowriteX() functions to guarantee that HW observes memory changes before performing register operations. The generic dma_direct implementation does the same thing as the alpha pci-noop implementation, just with more bells and whistles.
